Scholastic Aptitude Tests

We shall imagine that criterion variable is score on a reading aptitude test, the covariate is number of literature courses taken, and the grouping variable is gender.

Test

One of the first objectives adopted by the program was the development of a career testing component to provide information needed for counseling students and for planning needed changes in the school curriculum. In addition to the problem of possible cultural bias of existing tests, it was recognized that the students might lack requisite language skills. Scheduling problems and absenteeism prevented the testing of the remaining students.

Aptitude

People generally take more courses in areas where their aptitude is high rather than low, so statistically removing the gender difference in number of literature courses taken also removes (or reduces or even reverses) the (real, unadjusted) gender difference in aptitude. Does this mean that men really have higher reading aptitude that is just masked by their not taking many literature courses. This results in the aptitude scores of participants who took many literature courses being lowered and the aptitude scores of participants who took few literature courses being raised.

Child

Here are some ways you can start helping your child:. If you have the time, schedule weekly or biweekly trips to the library with your child. To help develop your child's critical thinking skills, encourage your child to ask questions or to predict what will happen next in the story. Encourage your child to do the same. As your child's ability to read develops, let your child pick out a favorite book to read alone. If your child is unsure of the meaning of a word, have your child use the surrounding words or sentences to figure it out. Buy a children's dictionaryif possible, one that has pictures next to the words. Help your child get into the habit of looking up unfamiliar or difficult words.

Reading

Reading is the most important skill that a child must acquire at school, because one must learn to read to be able to read to learn. When reading and wiring are a regular part of your family's life, you send your child the message that they are enjoyable, valuable and great ways to learn. Keep many age appropriate books and other reading materials in your house. Show your child that you value reading and that it is important to you. Start reading to your child at an early stage. Make reading daily to your infant or toddler part of your daily routine. When your child becomes a preschooler, you can start reading for a longer period of time. Take turns, with you reading one page or paragraph and your child reading the next. If this doesn't help, just tell your child what the word means and keep reading. If you notice that your child is having some difficulties with reading, get some help for your child. Identify if your child is having problems with vocabulary or reading comprehension.
